Description
Up for bid is a highly unusual early coin silver sugar tongs,
marked CB, likely Southern, ca 1810. The piece is 6 5/8 inches long and weighs 47
grams. It has plain oval grips, unusual convex
arms and a large oval bend decorated with wriggle-work engraving. It is monogrammed “AC” on the bend. It is marked [C.B] in a rectangle inside the
bend. I picked it up from a dealer in
Kentucky last summer. The style is so
unusual I have to suspect that it was made in the South or West, though I have
not found the mark in any reference book to date.
Condition on the tongs is quite good. The bend seems to be just slightly pinched,
as opposed to a smooth curve, but it is not bad at all. There is normal wear from use. Possibly an important old Southern sugar
tongs!
